Our daily news digest kicks off the week with an abundance of both established and upcoming Web3 gaming titles. 

Games that made waves today include Axie Infinity, Rumble Kong League, Medieval Empires, Apeiron, Ethlas, Big Time, Crabada, and Gods Unchained, etc. They are joined by Illuvium, Shrapnel, Star Atlas, Thetan Arena, Dawn of Victory, and Stella Fantasy, among others.

Furthermore, projects on the blockchain that made headlines also include names such as Starbucks, Boy Meets Girl, Earn Alliance, Internet Computer Protocol, and GAM3 Awards, to name a few.

Top Stories

  • According to coffee chain Starbucks, its Web3-based loyalty award platform has been experiencing an “unprecedented” demand since its launch. Dubbed “Starbucks Odyssey,” the new offering was introduced to an initial group of beta testers. In addition, the coffee brand also mentioned plans of expanding its user base, as well as adding more features in 2023 (DC).

  • A handful of celebrities from the field of music, sports, and entertainment were recently sued for promoting Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC). The blue-chip NFT collection’s parent company Yuga Labs, along with some prominent figures, are facing accusations in the class-action lawsuit. Named in the case are Kevin Hart, Madonna, Justin Beiber, Serena Williams, Stephen Curry, Paris Hilton, among others (V).

  • Polkastarters’ GAME3 Awards is just around the corner and one of the most exciting segments in the event is the “Most Anticipated Game” category. Titles for the award include Illuvium, Shrapnel, Star Atlas, Ember Sword, and Treeverse. The winners for all categories will be announced on the 15th of December (PS).

  • Stacy Igel-founded fashion line Boy Meets Girl, in conjunction with metaverse fashion brand House of Blueberry, revealed plans to launch a digital asset project. The four-piece collection is coming soon to Blueberry’s virtual fashion store on game platform Roblox in January 2023. Basically, the offering features some of the top-selling designs from the Boy Meets Girl clothing catalog (WWD).

  • Collectible basketball game Rumble Kong League’s (RKL) dev team continues to build the project with the community’s input in mind. Using feedback from RKL’s fanbase, the developers made some updates to the character’s shooting animation. They recently shared the changes through a video clip that showcased the added arc on a Kong player’s jumpshot (TW).

Web3 Games

  • Popular NFT breeding card game Axie Infinity recently revealed the changes for Bird cards in Origins Season 2. The updates covered changes to body parts and attributes. Additionally, the team also employed some mechanics updates on the following: Mavis, Little Raven, Eggshell, Cuckoo, Feather, and Feather Dagger-Tool Card (AXS). 

  • Multiplayer online strategy game Medieval Empires shared a roundup of the project’s achievements for 2022. Moreover, the video summary also presented a new epic-sounding theme song. Some of the milestones for the title include the land sale launch, dev team expansion, and the upcoming $MEE token launch on the 19th of December, among others (TW).

  • Battle Royale fantasy game Thetan Arena is will kick off its World Cup 2022 match prediction on the 13th of December. The “Football Fiesta” will take place on the Binance Smart Chain. Moreover, Glory Pass holders will get the chance to win their share of the $600,000 prize pool (TW).

  • Web3 gaming community and tools builder Earn Alliance has partnered with a handful of titles for a “Christmas Game Partner Badge” giveaway. Participants will have a chance to mint the new offering for free from December 18-24. Earn Alliance has created badges for the following games: Gods Unchained, Apeiron, Ethlas, Krypto Fighters, Big Time, Derby Stars, and Stella Fantasy (TW). 

  • Avalanche-based autobattler NFT game Crabada has kicked off week 24 of its Arena Challenge. As always, the team has tweaked several mechanics to shake up the game and provide more interesting options to participants. Running from December 12-18, the tournament offers several updates such as the Perfect Synergy Boost feature, which can grant Crabadas 50% attack increase (TW).

NFTs and Metaverse

  • Blockchain ecosystem builder ONBUFF has announced the launch of NFT collection “Ragnarok Labyrinth” on the INNO platform. Essentially, the new limited edition release features pets that grants players with in-game benefits such as increased speed or attack damage. Additionally, the team is also planning to airdrop upcoming events (DJ).

  • Seattle-based Web3 dev company KaJ Labs (creators of the Lithosphere network) has announced that its Finesse game series will reward its players with Shiba Inu ($SHIB). Essentially, $SHIB holders can use the cryptocurrency as a mode of payment for marketplace item purchases. Furthermore, the company will also burn 11 trillion $SHIB coins in the Play-to-Earn (P2E) game Finesse: Shadow Warriors (YF).

  • The Fashion Design Council of India, a non-profit association of fashion designers, recently launched an event on the metaverse. Dubbed the “Blenders Pride Glassware Fashion Tour,” the project is a fashion show that took place in virtual world Decentraland. Aside from clothing, the tour offered interactive, gamified, and showcase spots for participants as well (BMI).

Around the Blockchain

  • Crypto news publisher The Block’s CEO Michael McCaffrey has resigned from the company. He made the decision upon discovery of his undisclosed loans from collapsed exchange FTX’s trading arm Alameda Research. Apparently, McCaffrey’s three loans have reached a total of $43 million. In addition, the outgoing executive also received a $16 million payout that he used to obtain an apartment in the Bahamas (NFTN).

  • Public blockchain platform Internet Computer Protocol’s (ICP) not-for-profit creator the DFINITY Foundation has announced up to $100,000 in grants. The fund is dedicated for female developers and entrepreneurs in the space. Basically, the financial support aims to encourage women to build on the ICP ecosystem. In essence, DFINITY will provide builders with access to resources that could help fast-track their projects (BC).

  • Aptos blockchain developer Aptos Labs has settled a $1 billion dollar lawsuit with Los Angeles-based entrepreneur Shari Glazer. Along with the said amount, the complainant also demanded 50% ownership of the FTX-backed company. Glazer’s family owns National Football League (NFL) Super Bowl team the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (BJ).

Web3 Gaming Project Spotlight

  • Arenum: Arenum is a Polygon-based platform for mobile gaming tournaments. The project allows players to enjoy Esports titles on their phone. Furthermore, Arenum leverages cryptocurrency technology and employs P2E elements to provide gamers with in-game incentives.

  • Dawn of Victory: Dawn of Victory is touted as the first collectible card game on Web3 that focuses on World War 2 themes. Hosted on Wax blockchain, the project allows participants to relive the Normandy Landings (D-Day) that took place in June 6, 1944.

  • Mecha Morphing: Mecha Morphing is an Action Role-Playing Game (ARPG) with futuristic cyberpunk themes.  The Ethereum-based project allows participants to earn gold in battles, forge weapons and armors, and trade items on the marketplace. Moreover, the game also features resource mining and land looting features.

  • Starchi: Drawing inspiration from old school handheld digital pet toy Tamagotchi, Starchi allows collectors to obtain and nurture “never before seen” creatures called “Starchis.” Owners are tasked to raise their pets from infancy to adulthood. Additionally, players can also engage in friendly battles to earn wages.

  • Synergy of Serra: Synergy of Serra is an upcoming trading card game (TCG) with a rich sci-fi and fantasy-inspired storyline. In the game, players are allowed to build decks using their NFT card collection. In addition, the project also allows owners to trade or sell their digital assets.
