Fears loom in Web3 as Kraken and IBM try to slow down blockchain operations, but the good news undoubtedly still outnumbers the bad. 

In fact, entities like BMW, Forever 21, Laura Mercier, SK Telecom, Singtel, Aeria Canada Studio, and even the European Investment Bank, have all shown their faith in Web3 technology through their initiatives.

Furthermore, Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) and the metaverse are also thriving as various collections and platforms make their moves. Noteworthy projects headlining today’s curated news include Animoca Brands, Limit Break, Bored Ape Yacht Club, and Uniswap Labs, among others.

Last but not the least, Web3 games are making some gains as well. Titles featured in today’s digest include Swords of Blood, OpenBlox, MetalCore, Pulsar, Spider Tanks, Gods Unchained, and many more.

  • Gabe Leydon-founded Web3 game company Limit Break unveiled further details about plans for a Super Bowl commercial. The firm revealed that it will give away free NFT-based dragon characters. The mint will require a QR code shown on the ad, which is slated to run during Super Bowl LVII on February 14, 2023 (VB).

  • German performance luxury vehicle company BMW has applied to trademark its logo for NFTs and other virtual environments. All in all, the application will cover downloadable multimedia files of visual art, text, audio, as well as video of cars, motorcycles, etc. BMW first entered Web3 in February of this year, when they released a series of NFTs containing roaring sounds of their renowned engines (UT).

  • Cryptocurrency exchange Kraken is letting go 30% of its staff due to “significantly lower trading volumes and fewer client sign-ups.” The mass lay-off will affect 1,100 employees. Meanwhile, the industry attributes the weakening market conditions to the FTX fall-out (TC).

  • Animoca Brands is on a tear this year as the game software/venture capital company continues to pump some life into the nascent blockchain industry. The firm recently announced plans to launch a $2 billion metaverse fund. The initiative aims to help develop the metaverse ecosystem, as well as provide investors access to more Web3 entities (KC).

  • In celebration of its first year in the metaverse, popular fashion retailer Forever 21 is offering physical products based on their virtual collection. The latest offering includes hoodies, shirts, and beanies found on the brand’s Forever 21 Shop City metaverse. The platform, which was launched a year ago, is a “fashion retail experience” built on game creation system Roblox (WWD).

  • Wyoming-based game company HitBox Games has secured $1.6 million in venture funding for its upcoming Web3 action/RPG project Swords of Blood. The project is a blockchain expansion of the successful adventure title BladeBound. Other investors that joined the fundraising round include Fundamental Labs, Gate io Labs, and Master Ventures, among others (VB).

  • Video game company Aeria Canada Studio has announced a partnership with Web3 mobile gaming ecosystem Ready Player. The collaboration will help Aeria in integrating Web3 features into their vast portfolio of mobile games. Currently, the studio boasts a catalog of over 40 titles including American Block Sniper, Cops vs Robbers: Jailbreak” and “The Survival Hunter Games,” to name a few (NFTG).

  • Avalanche-based sci-fi strategy game Pulsar’s Launcher is now live. Users can go to the project’s official Discord server to start playing the Miner Tutorial. In addition, the team also announced that they will deliver more content and updates to this new feature in the coming weeks. Currently, the game is preparing for migration to Testnet (TW).

  • Ethereum-based blockchain ecosystem OpenBlox has announced a “Christmas Badge Collect Event.” The holiday offering, which will run from December 4 until the 24th, is giving away surprise gifts, as well as five types of badges (Iron, Copper, Silver, Gold, and Diamond). Participants need to complete a variety of tasks for them to obtain the rewards (M).

  • Web3 gaming fans still have a couple of weeks to vote for their favorite games on Polkastarter’s  upcoming GAM3 Awards. The nominees for “Best Esports Game” were also revealed recently. The lineup for the said category includes ev.io, MetalCore, Gods Unchained, Planet Mojo, and Spider Tanks (TW).

NFT News

  • ApeCoin’s ($APE) price has gone up by 31% over the past week. Moreover, Bored Ape and Mutant Ape NFT floor prices also went up by 34%. Apparently, the upcoming launch of the token’s staking rewards feature contributed to the sudden spike in prices. Essentially, $APE is specifically designed for blue-chip NFT collection Bored Ape Yacht Club’s (BAYC) ecosystem (DC).

  • Uniswap Labs, a major contributor to the creation of the Uniswap Protocol, launched its own NFT aggregator platform. The announcement came months after the company acquired Genie, which prides itself as the first NFT marketplace aggregator. Basically, the new offering allows users to view listings from OpenSea or LooksRare, among others, all at once (YF).

  • Commerce virtual world SPACE has introduced phygital creation capabilities on its platform. Artists, influencers, and shop owners can now easily produce an NFT representation of any physical item. “SPACE is pioneering the phygitals movement, and with its cutting-edge technology offers its users one of the best virtual shopping experiences,” SPACE founder and CEO Batis Samadian stated (EIN).

  • FanTiger, India’s first music NFT platform, registered record sales of over 50,000 NFT transactions in the last 30 days. “It is encouraging to look at how FanTiger is leading the charge to empower Independent Artists and build the music NFT ecosystem in India,” FanTiger co-founder and CEO Prashan Agarwal said (BW).

Into the Metaverse

  • Makeup and skincare brand Laura Mercier is set to make its debut in the metaverse this holiday season. The Orveon-owned company has collaborated with e-commerce platform Obsess to launch its virtual interactive store called “World of Beauty” (NFTG).

  • NFT collection Dolia Cats’ own metaverse is almost ready for its multichain launch. Dubbed the “Meowverse,” the ecosystem will incorporate games, a decentralized finance (DeFi) platform, Instagram augmented reality (AR) effects, and many more. Additionally, the team is also releasing a second version of the Dolia Cats Original NFT collection, following the success of the first (Genesis), which sold out in less than 24 hours (YF).

  • SK Telecom and Singtel, two of the largest telecommunications companies in South Korea and Singapore respectively, have recently formed a new partnership. The telecom giants aim to expand their metaverse services into the Asia-Pacific region. The first step in the collaboration is localizing SK’s metaverse platform “ifland” to cater to the Singaporean market (KH).

  • Singapore-based innovation management firm Lumos Labs has announced the winners of its multi-chain hackathon BUIDL for Web3 Hack 2022. Since its kick-off on the 1st of September, the competition saw the entry of over 7,700 developers. The winning participants covered 14 categories including Web3 games, NFTs, metaverse, and DeFi, to name a few (YS).

  • Pioneering tech corporation IBM recently announced the shutdown of its shipping container blockchain TradeLens. Apparently, the ecosystem is linked to Danish shipping company Maersk. Furthermore, the company is citing lack of commercial traction as the reason behind the closure (CD).

  • The European Investment Bank (EIB) issued a €100 million ($104m) digital bond on digital asset tokenization platform GS DAP. The EIB is the European Union’s (EU) lending arm. On the other hand, the private blockchain used for tokenizing is a newly launched project by investment giant Goldman Sachs (CT).
