Popular coffee company Starbucks unveiled on September 12, 2022, the project ‘Starbucks Odyssey.’ The brand tapped Layer-2 (L2) blockchain Polygon to help create a “Revolutionary Web3 Experience” for loyal customers and partners.

Odyssey leverages Non-Fungible Token (NFT) technology for Starbucks Rewards loyalty program members as well as partners or employees. Using the blockchain, patrons and personnel can earn and buy digital collectible stamps, as well as unlock other “coffee experiences.”

“Starbucks Odyssey will transcend the foundational benefits that our Starbucks Rewards members have come to love, and unlock digital, physical and experiential benefits that are uniquely Starbucks,” Starbucks executive vice president and chief marketing officer Brady Brewer stated.

Interested participants can click here to sign up for Starbucks Odyssey’s waitlist. The company will send invitations to lucky members later this year. Selected customers will be the first to experience the project as soon as it comes to fruition.

About Odyssey

Starbucks Odyssey supplements the existing Starbucks Rewards program that offers members various activities and games known as “journeys.” The platform rewards members with “journey stamp” NFTs upon completing challenges.

The Odyssey web app will also feature a marketplace where members can purchase limited edition stamp NFTs. In a bid to make the experience convenient to non-Web3 users, the stamps will be available to members who will purchase using a credit card (eliminating the need for cryptocurrencies and crypto wallets)

The stamps will feature artworks created in conjunction with creative partners and guest artists. Each piece will possess a point value based on its rarity and owning more stamps means more points for the holder.

As a result of accumulating points, members can unlock benefits such as access to various experiences. According to the company, possible perks include invitations to exclusive events at Starbucks Reserve Roasteries or visits to Starbucks Hacienda Alsacia coffee farm in Costa Rica.

Moreover, the brand will donate a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the limited-edition stamp NFTs to support advocacies for partners and rewards members.

About Starbucks

Starbucks is a “multinational chain of coffeehouses and roastery reserves.” Founded in 1971 in Seattle, Washington, the company is now the world’s largest coffeehouse chain. Currently, the chain has 383,00 employees globally, with over 33,000 stores in 80 countries.

In early May, the company announced plans to launch an NFT-based project that will offer benefits and experiences to loyal customers and employees. Eventually, the coffee giant partnered with Polygon to build Starbucks Odyssey.

About Polygon

Polygon is a Layer-2 (L2) solution designed primarily to solve Ethereum’s scalability problems. Basically, it employs a stack of protocols that handles transactions on a separate blockchain.

The network eventually grew into an ecosystem with its own Decentralized Applications (dApps). Along with Avalanche, Binance Smart Chain, and Ethereum, Polygon also has one of the most active gaming communities. Well-known web3 game titles on Polygon include Decentral Games, Pegaxy, and The Sandbox.

“Polygon is a natural choice for Starbucks as both companies place tremendous importance on diversity, accessibility, and sustainability.” Polygon Co-Founder Sandeep Nailwal stated. “As a leading infrastructure provider enabling people and technology to collaborate and exchange value globally and freely, Polygon provides the ideal launchpad for Starbucks’ entry into Web3.”
