Non-Fungible Token (NFT) trading card game Splinterlands announced a new partnership with Major League Soccer Players Association (MLSPA) on August 8, 2022. Major League Soccer is the premier soccer league in the US. The collaboration aims to create a fantasy based NFT game called Genesis League Soccer (GLS).
The project is Splinterlands’ first alliance with a major sporting organization and the team is planning to make GLS the flagship title that will lead a series of Web3 soccer games. Per the game’s Twitter account, lead soccer player card packs are planned for an October release.
“This is an incredible innovation in the sports industry, and MLSPA is one of its biggest players. Web 3.0 offers new standards and development possibilities set by its community members, and these form a new pathway to massive opportunity for all involved,” Splinterlands Co-founder and CEO Dr. Jesse “Aggroed” Reich said in a statement.
What is Splinterlands?
Splinterlands is a fast-paced digital card game powered by the HIVE blockchain. Leveraging NFTs, players can collect cards and trade them in the marketplace or use them to battle for rewards.
Splinter Shards ($SPS) is the governance token of Splinterlands. The token can be staked to own rewards or traded on Pancake Swap, a Decentralized Exchange (DEX) on the Binance Smart Chain. As of this writing, the token is trading at $0.07397, with a market cap of $58,505,896 and a 24-hour volume of $1,471,797 (per CoinMarketCap).
What is Genesis League Soccer?
GLS is the soccer game that will be developed. It will adopt existing card-based mechanics wherein users can collect and trade NFT cards of real-life major league players such as reigning league MVP Carles Gil of the New England Revolution.
The trading cards can be used for games based on matches and player statistics, while deploying a Play-to-Earn model to help generate revenues.
What is the MLSPA?
The Major League Soccer Player’s Association is the union of professional players in Major League Soccer, the premier soccer (or “football” in most parts of the world) league in the United States. Throughout the decades, MLS has been graced by some of the biggest talents in the sporting world, including the likes of former LA Galaxy superstars David Beckham and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, to name a few.
“Joining forces with Splinterlands, a pioneer and demonstrated leader in the fast-expanding world of play-to-earn gaming, allows our players to shape the future and create new gaming experiences to engage fans around the world,” MLSPA Chief Operating Officer Dan Jones said in a statement.
