Today’s Web3 Digest features entities from the field of art, music, beverage, sports, gaming, finance, and hospitality. Names that made headlines include Absolut, Aura Skypool Lounge Dubai, Regal Hotels, and Riot Platforms (formerly Riot Blockchain).

Furthermore, Web3-based projects are also making some significant moves with various projects and initiatives. Some of the blockchain entities that deserve the spotlight include Binance NFT, Brightnode, Chainlink, GammaRey, Sastanaqqam, and SmartLedger, among others.

Lastly, Web3 gaming is alive and making some noise in crypto-land. Titles that made some moves are Anito Legends, Ascenders, Calvaria: Duels of Eternity, Crabada, and Umi’s Friends.

  • Pop culture magazine Rolling Stone, has announced an upcoming NFT collection launch with Russian feminist collective Pussy Riot co-founder Nadya Tolokonnikova. Dubbed ‘Matriarchy Now,’ the project features the works of German photographer Ellen von Unwerth. Set for release on the 11th of January, the NFT’s sales proceeds will support advocacies focused on women’s reproductive rights (RS).

  • Beverage company Absolut recently filed a trademark application with the United States Patents and Trademark Office. The filing is intended for one of its brands Malibu, along with a host of Web3-based features. According to patent attorney Mike Kondoudis, the application includes virtual bars, restaurants, clothing, footwear, and alcoholic drinks. Additionally, trading apps and NFT marketplaces were also listed (B2C).

  • Digital marketing hub FSN announced a partnership with blockchain solution provider Chainlink Labs, the creators of blockchain oracle network Chainlink. The collaboration aims “to accelerate the widespread adoption of NFTs and the NFT ecosystem in South Korea.” In 2022, FSN also launched NFT marketplace Xclusive, and NFT-first wallet Favorlet (CFI).

  • Top Bitcoin ($BTC) mining company Riot Blockchain has initiated a rebranding strategy that included a name change to ‘Riot Platforms.’ The entity cites its growing business portfolio as one of the main reasons for the shift. “The scope and scale of our businesses continues to expand” Riot CEO Jason Les stated. Les also added that the rebrand “better reflects” the company’s “position as strategic allocators of capital” (YF).

Web3 Games

  • Upcoming Play-to-Earn (P2E) game Calvaria: Duels of Eternity’s token presale is now on its last phase. As of this writing, the project has sold 85% of its tokens, and has raised $2.64 million. Moreover, the project is set to release in Q2 2023. In essence, Calvaria is a collectible battle card game similar to Web3 titles Gods Unchained and Splinterlands (B2C).

  • Philippine-made strategic autobattler game Anito Legends is now officially listed on Web3 app store Magic Square. The project requires players to acquire NFTs of Anitos, which are deities and spirits of ancestors (in Filipino folklore). Gamers can can use the assets to play various modes such as Raid Battle, Arena, and Adventure Mode, etc. (TW).

  • Tile-matching Web3 game Umi’s Friends has announced a partnership with blockchain game store Colizeum. The initiative will allow the team to provide new experiences for their users, while creating reward opportunities. “The Play-To-Earn model is the future of gaming, and we are thrilled to be working with Colizeum to bring this innovative approach to more games,” the team stated (M).

  • Autobattler NFT game Crabada introduced its “Crabada-World Short Story Series,” to spice up the title’s expanding lore. The first edition features the “Book of Excramos, Volume 1: Astrid of Lamplight.” The story follows the protagonist ‘Astrid,’ and her encounters at the Whalebone Tavern in the city of Lamplight. The story culminates with the revelation (spoiler alert) of “Eramos,” a newly discovered region in Bogmire (M).

  • Avalanche-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game (RPG) Ascenders recently dropped a sneak preview of the project’s environments. Web3 launchpad Avalaunch also shared the teaser and praised the team for “pushing Web3 gaming toward a standard of production that mainstream adoption requires” (TW).

NFT News

  • Digital asset marketplace Binance NFT kicked off 2023 with a New Year’s promotion. The platform is offering “zero trading fees” for select blue-chip NFT projects until the 31st of January. The titles are: 10KTF, Azuki, Bored Ape Yacht Club, CLONE X – X TAKASHI MURAKAMI, Doodle, Mutant Ape Yacht Club, Otherdeed for Otherside, Meebits, Moonbirds, and Pudgy Penguins. Moreover, Binance NFT is also giving away 40,000 $BUSD worth of rewards (BSCN).

  • Mobile-first, Web3-focused platform Virtualness announced that it will power a digital experience for fans of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). Basically, Virtualness is tasked to help the nation’s premier hoop league in designing, minting, showcasing, and selling their digital collectibles. “The PBA and its players are beloved by their fanatical fans not just in the Philippines, but throughout the world,” co-founders of Virtualness co-founders Kirthiga Reddy and Saurabh Doshi stated (YF).

  • Blockchain dev company RadianceTeam has launched an NFT Art Generator and Publisher app on NEAR protocol. Essentially, the collection builder is equipped with tools for tasks such as creating thousands of digital art pieces. This makes it easier for artists to produce NFTs without having to rely on coding knowledge (PRN).

Into the Metaverse

  • Media Shower, a media firm that provides communication solutions for various companies, has announced the launch of its BMJ Reward Token. The token is part of a program that offers rewards for Bitcoin Market Journal (BMJ) subscribers. Every month, members will each receive ten Reward Tokens, which they can redeem for real-world merchandise and experiences (BW).

  • Regal Hotels, one of the largest hotel groups in Hong Kong, has entered the metaverse. The company recently purchased a piece of virtual real estate on open-world platform The Sandbox’s Mega City 2 district. Launching on January 12, Regal’s project is the first phase of ‘Meta Green.’ In essence, the offering will feature eco-friendly facilities. This includes hotels and malls, as well as art and performance spaces (TS).

  • Hospitality investment and management company Sunset Hospitality, in conjunction with digital asset ecosystem Rare City, has announced the launch of Dubai’s AURA Skypool Lounge in the metaverse. The famous destination is currently the world’s highest 360° infinity pool. The landmark’s virtual world version will feature sunrise, sunsets, fireworks, and panoramic views of the city (AB).

  • Web3 solutions provider and business consulting firm Brightnode has formed a partnership with blockchain ecosystem Sastanaqqam. The collaboration will focus on developing Brightnode’s tokenomics for its own platform. Basically, the entities will create what they call the “Blue Token,” which will serve as the medium of exchange on the Sastanaqqam ecosystem (YF).

  • Web3-focused financial technology (FinTech) firm GammaRey recently signed a merger agreement with e-commerce and consumer data analytics company GoLogiq. According to stipulations, GoLogiq will issue $320 million in common stock to acquire 100% of GammaRey’s outstanding shares. Through this initiative, the entities plan to “focus on the high-growth market of wealth management for Generation Z and Millennials” (CT).

  • Blockchain distribution channel SmartLedger has announced the launch of two Web3-based music apps. The projects are media publishing and digital rights management platform Rare Generation, and music streaming platform Streamable FM. The aforementioned applications aim to “give artists and rights holders the power to take control of their creative works,” while receiving better compensation for their efforts (CG).

  • Brycent: Web3 gamer and content creator Brycent recently emphasized on Twitter the importance of true ownership of assets in gaming. The Twitch partner highlighted the flawed system that allows players to spend “thousands on gaming skins” without having “the right to trade, sell, or give” the assets. Moreover, Brycent also stated that owning items in traditional titles such as Valorant and Fortnite “is the equivalent of giving a game developer a lifetime interest-free loan.”

  • Cagy: Crypto game YouTuber Cagy shared his review of P2E game Axie Infinity’s land offering. The Juice Team founder critiqued the project’s flaws and offered some insights on which areas require improvements. This includes the “clunky” process of building roads, user interface (UI) interference, and items, which Cagy believes “should be easier to craft,” using the game’s crafting features.

  • Hustle: Crypto Banter host Hustle’s NFT gaming collective The Thing of Ours (TTOO) recently announced a few additions to its digital asset “warchest.” The “NFT Treasury Overview” reveals that TTOO has acquired a significant amount of NFTs from the following projects: My Pet Hooligan (including Zuckbot companions and keys), Collider Craft cyphers (along with airdrop cyphers and Villager of Zolo Moshpit tournament prizes), and Vulcan Forged nodes.

  • Spike: Spike is one of the most active Web3 content creators in the space and he continues to lend a helping hand to fellow community leaders. Believing that a “rising tide lifts all boats,” the esports player looks forward to “help, inspire, and empower as many people as possible.” Aside from sharing access to titles such as Illuvium and Star Atlas, Spike also recently gave away some in-game skins to his fellow Web3 gaming influencers.
