Today’s roundup features entities from various industries such as art, fashion, finance, gaming, and telecommunications, among others. Names that made a buzz in the space recently include Animoca Brands, BMW, Mandala Club, Prada, Square Enix, and Tokio Marine Holdings. 

Web3 games are showing some strength as well, as developers continue to build and improve their projects. Titles that made noise include Crabada, Eternal Dragons, Gran Saga: Unlimited, Imperium Empires, and Monkey League. Last but not least, we will also look at the most recent updates from content creators Brycent, Cagy, Hustle, and Spike, to further enrich our knowledge about the space.

  • German vehicle manufacturer BMW has formed a partnership with layer-2 (L2) cross-chain platform Coinweb. The collaboration aims to integrate Web3 capabilities into BMW’s operations in Thailand. The car company is also developing a smart contracts platform to streamline financing-related processes. In addition, BMW is also planning a blockchain-based loyalty program for customers in the South East Asian country (BMW).

  • Italian luxury fashion brand Prada has announced the launch of its 8th Timecapsule NFT shirt release on January 5, 2023. Titled ‘Interferenza Ottica Art Print by Enzo Ragazzini 1969,’ the collection features renowned photographer Enzo Ragazzini’s works. Additionally, the limited edition (50 pieces) digital project will only be available for 24 hours (AR).

  • Video game conglomerate Square Enix’s president Yosuke Matsuda tackled some of the challenges that the industry faced in 2022. In a statement, the representative director touched on the steps that the company is taking to bolster its framework and boost its initiatives. Furthermore, Matsuda also emphasized the importance of Web3 and shared pointers to address issues surrounding the technology (SE).

  • Web3 game developer Animoca Brands’ NFT collection Mocaverse announced the criteria for allowlist eligibility for its ‘Mocalist’ registration event. Basically, the project is open to Animoca investors, employees, partners, Mocalist members, and management teams (M).

  • International lobbying organization the World Economic Forum (WEF) recently expressed its optimism in blockchain technology’s future. The group stated that “cryptography and blockchains will continue to be integral parts of the modern economic toolkit. In addition, the WEF cited “big banks and mature financial services firms” as examples of Web3-utilizing entities (WEF).

Web3 Games

  • Avalanche-based autobattler idle game Crabada has kicked off the 27th installment of its weekly Arena Challenge. As shown in previous iterations, the latest tournament introduced several changes to the mechanics to “keep things fresh and entertaining.” This week’s edition features updates on Arena Tickets, Stronghold, and Perfect Synergy Boost, among others (M).

  • AAA space strategy game Imperium Empires shared a blog titled ‘Captain’s Log 2022 – The State of Imperium Empires.’ The entry focused on the game’s achievements, as well as the challenges and that came along the way (M).

  • Arcade sports strategy game MonkeyLeague has ended the first phase of the ‘MonkeyPioneers’ registration event. The team revealed the winners of the Holiday Monkeys and Breeding Capsules and has sent prizes to the winners via their inboxes. In addition, MonkeyLeague is also giving away 40,000 $MBS tokens to participants (ML).

  • Layer-1 (L1) blockchain Aptos, in conjunction with South Korean developer NPIXEL, is slated to launch its first Web3 game in 2023. Titled ‘Gran Saga: Unlimited,’ the project is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) built on metaverse ecosystem METAPIXEL. Essentially, the game is the blockchain version of the NPIXEL’s popular Web2 game Gran Saga (GT).

  • Solana-based strategy game Eternal Dragons recently shared a release note to inform the community on the project’s latest developments. Some of the changes include the introduction of the leaderboard and improved wallet linking, among others. Additionally, the team also fixed issues to in-game typographical errors, shop level-up bugs, and infinite loading page, to name a few (ED).

NFT News

  • The NFT Biennial is slated to kick off for the first time at Zorlu PSM (Zorlu Performing Arts Center) in Istanbul, Turkey. From January 6 to 15, the exhibit will showcase 100 NFT artworks at Zorlu’s gallery area. Furthermore, the event will also feature various activities such as media art performances, hybrid conversations, and virtual reality/augmented reality (VR/AR) experiences (HDN). 

  • Tax-loss harvesting platform ‘Unsellable’ has purchased over 9,300 NFTs that have already lost their value. By selling their “worthless” collection, owners can classify the digital assets as losses to help reduce their taxable capital gains. Titles in the Unsellable gallery are mostly derivative projects such as the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) imitation the ‘Anatomy Science Ape Club’ (CD).

  • Recently, Channel News Asia’s lifestyle segment ‘CNA Luxury’ featured Singapore-based private members club Mandala Club. Apparently, the club offers a 15,000 SGD (11,152 in US dollars as of this writing) NFT membership. In essence, the one-time fee will grant owners a limited-edition (the club released only 250 NFTs) Genesis Pass membership. Some of the pass benefit include access to physical and virtual experiences such as summits and festivals among others (CNAL).

Into the Metaverse

  • Malaysia-based management consultancy firm Hytech has launched its brand at its Dinner and Dance (D&D) event in the metaverse. Over 980 employees attended the online gathering, breaking virtual world project Decentraland’s record for most visitors in an hour. Essentially, the company aims to use the launch to consolidate its teams through the creation of a “unified identity” for their employees (PRN).

  • Dialog Axiata PLC, one of Sri Lanka’s largest telecommunications service providers, has launched ‘Futureverse.’ Basically, the project is the country’s first immersive and interactive metaverse. In a nutshell, the platform allows users to shop, attend events, watch movies, socialize, and play games, among others (TCTV).

  • Tokio Marine Holdings, the largest property/casualty insurance group in Japan, is bringing its services and operations to the metaverse. Using a platform called ‘Virtual Akiba World,’ the company will allow interested parties to interact with real clerks and inquire about the products. In addition, users can also fill up and send forms, as well as sign contracts in the virtual world (BTC).

Web3 Content Creators

  • Brycent: Web3 gamer and twitch partner Brycent is giving away ten free playtest spots for RPG title The Fabled. Powered by blockchain protocols Ethereum and Polygon, the project combines elements of action and fantasy. To join the contest, players are required to like and retweet the original announcement, join Brycent’s official Discord server, and interact with ‘LootBolt’ in the channel. 

  • Cagy: Web3 gaming YouTuber Cagy recently shared a video on how to get gold in Axie Infinity Homeland for Land Gameplay. Some of the ways to obtain the valuable resource include the completion of different quests. Another is to equip characters with items such as food and weapons. After crafting the objects, the user can sell them in exchange for gold.

  • Jonny: Crypto Banter host Hustle (Jonny) shared a few ways on how would-be investors can make smarter decisions in the space. Titled ‘The TOP Crypto Money-Making Strategies in 2023, the video staking strategies and stated the importance of building a crypto watchlist. Moreover, Hustle also emphasized the impact of games, NFT projects, and artificial intelligence (AI) in fuelling Web3 growth.

  • Spike: Ending 2022 with a bang is Web3 content creator and Esports player Spike with his recent partnership with upcoming mobile MMORPG project Oath of Peak. The 72-hour year-end promo gave away three Genesis NFTs to the lucky winners, whose names were announced on January 3, 2023.
