Avalanche NFTs on Shopify, Lenovo’s Metaverse Initiatives, Gam3rs Choice Awards Nominees

Despite daily challenges in Web3, Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), metaverse projects, and games continue to provide people with better experiences.

Established brands that headline the space today include Heller, Hyundai, Lenovo, Shopify, Timex, and Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance. Moreover, Web3-based entities such as Alpha Metaverse Technologies, Aptos, Collection, Digby, MeetKai, and SeaShrine, made some noteworthy moves as well.

Meanwhile, the upcoming GAM3RS CHOICE AWARDS is gathering some steam after it announced the nominated titles. Aside from games, the event will also honor Web3 content creators with the nomination of Brycent, cagy, CryptoStache, Jonah Blake, and Spike. 

Lastly, Web3 gaming is alive and well. Projects that continue to make some noise include Aurory, Big Time, MetalCore, MetaOps, Phantom Galaxies, Shrapnel, Soulbound, and many more.

  • E-commerce company Shopify has introduced new features that will allow merchants to design, mint, and sell Avalanche NFTs. With the updates, storefronts can now use the Venly Shopify merchant app to sell digital collectibles conveniently. According to Avalanche developer Ava Labs’ vice president John Nahas, “the integration makes it easy to navigate Avalanche NFT sales from initial design all the way through final distribution” (CD).

  • PC manufacturer Lenovo made its presence felt at the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) tech conference with its metaverse offerings. For the first time, the company unveiled its all-in-one enterprise-level virtual reality (VR) headset ThinkReality VRX to the public. According to Lenovo’s website, the immersive device provides users with “full-color, high-resolution pass-through capabilities for mixed reality applications” (WRAL).

  • Renowned watch brand Timex has teamed up with long-term holders of blue-chip NFT project Bore Ape Yacht Club (BAYC). The collaboration resulted in the launch of rare one-of-one timepieces that also come with NFTs. Essentially, the project is a hand-assembled watch based on the Timex Waterbury Classic design. However, this special edition collection showcases Apes and Mutant characters with 30,000 possible variations (PRN).

  • Technology company Digby has formed a partnership with international furniture manufacturer Heller to launch the Digby Design Authenticator (DDA) system. Basically, DDA is a tool that allows brands and designers to link their products to NFTs. “The Digby Design Authenticator is the ideal product to complement our process,” Heller president and CEO John Edelman stated (ZEEN).

Web3 Games

  • Tactical first-person shooter (FPS) game MetaOps has announced that it is “building on and partnering with” Avalanche blockchain. The Solana-based project offers an “action-packed multiplayer gameplay” that pits factions as they battle for NFT rewards. Additionally, the team also shared a video teaser to hype up the collaboration (TW).

  • In-person Web3 gaming awards show the GAM3RS CHOICE AWARDS is set to take center stage on the 31st of January in Miami. The team has announced the official nominees across 18 categories, such as Game of the Year, Most Engaged Community, and Metaverse of the Year, to name a few. Listed titles include Big Time, illuvium, MetalCore, Rumble Kong League, Shrapnel, and many more (TW).

  • Upcoming adventure role-playing game (RPG) Aurory is hosting its first-ever ‘Tactics Video Contest.’ Participants will get the chance to receive a portion of the $5,000 prize pool, along with some NFTs. Categories for the video-making competition include Best Overall Video, Best Explainer Video, Most Entertaining Video, Most Viral Video, and Best Effort (TW).

  • Deck-building turn-based tactics game Ruffion Reborn has announced that its public mint is now live. The collectible card game (CCG) is a Treasure DAO game on the Arbitrum ecosystem.  In addition, the project is also an open-source framework that allows NFT holders to build their own games (TW).

  • Polygon-based sci-fi RPG title Phantom Galaxies, in conjunction with metaverse project Soulbound, has announced an upcoming speed run event. Dubbed ‘The Starfighter Sprint,’ the tournament will run from January 9 to 23. Essentially, the competition will allow participants to “race through the four Phantom Galaxies Alpha episodes.” Furthermore, the top ranking players on the leaderboard will earn rewards including NFTs, Astrafer tokens, and many more (M).

NFT News

  • US authorities have arrested the developer of knock-off NFT project Mutant Ape Planet for allegedly defrauding investors of $2.9 million. Aurelien Michel, the creator of the Bored Ape Yacht Club imitation, is believed to have orchestrated a “rug pull scheme.” In a statement, Internal Revenue Service agent Thomas Fattorusso said that the French national “defrauded investors by making false representations of giveaways, tokens with staking features, and merchandise collections” (CT).

  • Following several hacks on NFT marketplace Magic Eden, the company continues to deal with other issues. After the platform started displaying pornographic content earlier this week, Magic Eden is now encountering problems with the proliferation of fake NFTs on the marketplace. Among the higher-priced projects that had imposter listings and were sold to unsuspecting victims include y00ts and ABC (CD).

  • NFT liquidity incentive protocol Collection has launched an NFT decentralized exchange (DEX) on Goerli Testnet. The platform allows users to trade digital assets via automated market makers (AMM). “Collection.xyz’s new design solves a long overlooked challenge with liquidity pools excluding a large number of NFTs that trade at a premium to their collection floor,” Saison Capital partner Chris Sirise stated (NFTG).

  • NFT marketplace SeaShrine is now live on the Aptos blockchain. The platform’s initial version offers buying and selling features, with more updates and additions coming in the near future. The makers of SeaShrine are the same team behind Ebisu’s Bay, an NFT marketplace on the Cronos blockchain (BSCN).

Into the Metaverse

  • Automotive manufacturer Hyundai Motor India has launched its ‘Hyundai Pavillion’ on metaverse platform Hyundai Mobility Adventure. Basically, it is a virtual city built on game creation platform Roblox, and will go live during the country’s Auto Expo 2023. The immersive space will allow users to experience the car-maker’s five flagship models: Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, Nexo, Tucson, and Venue N Line. Additionally, customers can also attend virtual music events at Hyundai Spotlight (BS).

  • Technology company Alpha Metaverse Technologies has entered into an amending agreement with software developer Shape Immersive Entertainment. On July 11, 2022, Alpha completed its acquisition of Shape Immersive. Alpha focuses on emerging markets in Web3 gaming, NFTs, esports, and e-commerce, as well as AR/VR projects (YF).

  • Starting on January 2023, Japanese insurance company Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Co., Ltd will begin selling insurance through the metaverse. This makes the firm the first-ever entity to offer insurance plans via the virtual world. Using the Virtual Akiba World metaverse platform, the insurer’s sales staff and customers can communicate with one another using virtual avatars (IBM).

  • Metaverse and conversational artificial intelligence (AI) company MeetKai unveiled several metaverse-focused platforms at CES 2023. Among the new offerings launched at the conference include 3D digitizing service MeetKai Reality, virtual world editing toolkit the MeetKai Metaverse Editor, and MeetKai Cloud AI, a platform that allows builders to integrate a cloud-driven assistant into a virtual environment (TC).

Web3 Content Creators

  • Brycent: Recently, Twitch streamer Brycent shared some reasons why Web3 gaming will take over the industry. Believing that traditional gaming business models are dying, Brycent pointed out that gamers lack ownership and representation in the old system. Moreover, the content creator also cited the billions of dollars flowing into the space as a sign that “the gaming world is gradually leading towards this change.”

  • Cagy: Web3 gaming YouTuber Cagy recently returned to playing popular play-to-earn (P2E) NFT game Axie Infinity. After providing a critique on the project’s latest offering, the content creator was all praises for the game, specifically the size of the Axie community that other games will struggle to match.

  • CryptoStache: CryptoStache has announced the return of the NFT Beat starting next week. Running every Tuesday, the show will also introduce Stache’s new co-host live event emcee and keynote speaker JChains. “The #1 NFT news show is BACK!” Stache tweeted, adding “We cover market trends + breaking NFT news, PFP’s, art, gaming & of course FREE NFT giveaways!”

  • Hustle: Crypto Banter host Hustle introduced a Web3 gaming marketing agency service called W3B Scaler. The latest offering is an initiative of Hustle’s NFT gaming collective This Thing of Ours (TTOO). Hustle emphasized in a post that “Web 3 Games and top tier NFT brands need credible exposure.” He added that W3B Scaler’s role is to “bring all-natural, organic exposure, collabs and new players” into the ecosystem.

  • Spike: Spike is one of the movers and shakers who were nominated for GAM3RS CHOICE AWARDS’ “Creator of the Year” category. The esports player joins fellow Web3 content creators Brycent, cagy, CryptoStache, and Jonah Blake in the list. In a recent post, Brycent commended Spike for “leading the charge for web3 esports.”
